The Sunni Tragedy in the Middle East: From Al-Qaeda to ISIS In the turbulent landscape of the Middle East, Northern Lebanon stands out as a land plagued by social breakdown and Sunnified jihad. For years, this region has been under the control of the Assad regime in Syria, but now it has become a magnet for Sunni Muslim jihadists who are inspired by anti-Western and anti-Shi'a ideologies. In his book, "The Sunni Tragedy in the Middle East Bernard Rougier delves into the struggle led by an active minority of jihadist militants, some of whom claim allegiance to ISIS, to seize control of Islam and impose their rule over the region's Sunni Arab population. Rougier introduces us to men with ties to the mujahidin in Afghanistan, the Sunni resistance in Iraq, al-Qaeda, and ISIS. He explains how these jihadists have successfully positioned themselves as the most credible defenders of the local Sunni population against powerful external enemies such as Iran and the Shi'a militia group, Hezbollah. Through his extensive research, including more than one hundred in-depth interviews with key players at all levels, Rougier sheds new light on the methods and actions of the jihadists, their internal debates, and their evolving political agenda over the past decade.
