Despite the existence of these libraries being well known, our knowledge of their content and structure has been limited until now. This book, "Medieval Damascus Plurality and Diversity in an Arabic Library edited by Michael W. Dols and translated by Ayman F. M. Abd-Allah, sheds light on the catalogue of the Ashrafiya Library, providing a comprehensive understanding of the books that were held within its walls. The catalogue reveals that even book collections attached to Sunni religious institutions could contain unexpected titles such as stories from the 1001 Nights, manuals for traders, medical handbooks, Shiite prayers, love poetry, and texts extolling wine consumption. This diversity of texts challenges the traditional view of Islamic libraries as solely focused on religious texts, highlighting instead the plurality and diversity of knowledge that was valued in these institutions.
