The law requires employers with five or more employees to provide up to four days (32 hours) of paid sick leave per year, while smaller employers must provide up to 40 hours of unpaid sick leave. The law applies to all employees who have been working for their current employer for at least six months and work at least 8 hours a week. Employees can use this leave for themselves or family members, including parents-in-law, siblings, and domestic partners. Employers must display a notice informing employees of their rights under the law, which can be found on the city’s website. Employers who violate the law could face fines of up to $500 per violation. The law was signed into effect by Mayor Bloomberg in May 2013, but it took some time for the rules and regulations to be finalized. The city has created a website with information on the law and how it will be enforced. The law is expected to affect over one million workers in the city, many of whom do not currently receive paid sick leave.
