Accelerating Catchup Tertiary Education for Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa: Directions in Development As we enter the third decade of the 21st century, the revival of economic growth across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) since the turn of the millennium is a heartening development. Sustaining this growth over the long term, however, poses both a necessity and a significant challenge. The key to unlocking economic success in a globalized world lies in effectively assimilating available knowledge and building comparative advantage in selected areas with good growth prospects. This can only be achieved by pushing the frontiers of technology through innovation, diversifying products and services, and maximizing returns from capital assets through more efficient allocation and management. While African countries have made significant progress in achieving high levels of literacy and raising primary enrollment rates, it is now essential to move quickly to acquire higher-order skills and expertise that will allow them to add value in existing economic activities and enter new industries and services. Accelerating tertiary education for growth in SSA is crucial to achieving this goal.
