Framing Africa: Portrayals of a Continent in Contemporary Mainstream Cinema In the first decade of the 21st century, there has been a surge of North American and European films that focus on African politics and society, offering a stark contrast to the previous narratives of heroic ascendancy over self and nature. Gone are the days of The African Queen (1951), The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952), Zulu (1964), and Mogambo (1953), which portrayed Africa as a land of adventure and exploration. Instead, the new wave of films depicts a continent blighted by transnational corruption, genocide, and the unfulfilled promises of decolonization. The Constant Gardener (2005), Hotel Rwanda (2004), Shooting Dogs (2006), Blood Diamond (2006), and The Last King of Scotland (2006) paint a picture of a continent plagued by conflict, poverty, and inequality.
