Franco's Pirates: Naval Aspects of the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 ===================================================== The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) was a complex and multifaceted conflict that pitted the Nationalist forces, led by General Francisco Franco, against the Republican forces, supported by the left-wing political parties and the working class. The war had far-reaching consequences, not only for Spain but also for Europe and the world at large. One of the most significant aspects of the war was the naval aspect, which involved the use of pirate ships and submarines by both sides. In this article, we will explore the naval aspects of the Spanish Civil War and how they impacted the outcome of the conflict. Introduction ------------ The Spanish Civil War began in July 1936 when a group of military officers, led by General Francisco Franco, launched a coup against the democratically elected government of the Second Spanish Republic. The coup was successful, and Franco's forces quickly gained control of much of Spain, including the mainland and the islands. The Republicans, however, held onto some territories, including the eastern coast and the city of Barcelona. The war soon became a global conflict, with Italy and Germany supporting Franco's forces, while the Soviet Union supported the Republicans.
