Forgotten Florida: An Engaging Story of the Building of Tallahassee, the Establishment of Key West, and the Settlement of Sanibel Island In the early 19th century, the Florida peninsula was a vast and largely unexplored region, filled with untamed wilderness and home to various Native American tribes. However, as the United States began to expand its borders and assert its dominance over the continent, the Spanish government, who had previously claimed control over the land, ceded it to the U. S. government in 1819 through the Adams-Onís Treaty. This marked the beginning of a new era in the development of the Gulf coastal areas, as well-documented men like Commodore David Porter, Colonel James Gadsden, Colonel George Brooke, and Major Francis Dade set out to establish settlements and open up the land for American settlers. One such man was Richard Hackley, a New York lawyer who had purchased the entire west side of Florida from the Spanish Duke Alagon, believing the purchase to be legal.
Forgotten Florida: An Engening Story of the Building of Tallahassee, the Establishment of Key West, and the Settlement of Sanibel Island
Forgotten Florida: An Engening Story of the Building of Tallahassee, The establishment of Key West, and the Settlement of Sanibel Island All'inizio del XIX secolo la penisola della Florida era una vasta e notevolmente inesplorata regione piena di intatti la natura selvaggia e la casa per le varie tribù indiane. Unutulmuş Florida: Tallahassee Binasının İlgi Çekici Bir Hikayesi, Key West'in Kurulması ve Sanibel Adası Yerleşimi 19. yüzyılın başında, Florida yarımadası, bozulmamış vahşi yaşamla dolu ve çeşitli Hint kabilelerine ev sahipliği yapan geniş ve büyük ölçüde keşfedilmemiş bir bölgeydi. Bununla birlikte, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri sınırlarını genişletmeye ve kıta üzerindeki hakimiyetini iddia etmeye başladığında, daha önce toprağın kontrolünü talep eden İspanyol hükümeti, 1819'da Adams-Onís Antlaşması ile ABD hükümetine devretti. Bu, körfezin kıyı bölgelerinin gelişiminde yeni bir dönemin başlangıcına işaret etti; Commodore David Porter, Albay James Gadsden, Albay George Brooke ve Binbaşı Francis Dade gibi iyi belgelenmiş adamlar, yerleşim yerleri kurmaya ve araziyi Amerikalı yerleşimcilere açmaya başladılar. Bu kişilerden biri, Florida'nın tüm batı kısmını İspanyol Alagon Dükü'nden satın alan ve satın almanın yasal olduğuna inanan New York'lu bir avukat olan Richard Hackley'di.
