Globalization of Defense Materials and Manufacturing Proceedings of a Workshop: A Key to Understanding Technological Evolution and Survival in a Rapidly Changing World In today's rapidly changing world, emerging economies, social and political transitions, and new ways of doing business are dramatically altering the global landscape. To remain competitive in this climate, defense manufacturing enterprises must adapt and evolve with the times. This requires not only improvements in materials processing but also a shift towards more sustainable practices that prioritize environmental stewardship and responsible decision-making. The value of specific manufacturing capabilities can be defined not only in terms of their criticality to defense systems but also in relation to technology and knowledge content, importance as suppliers to other industries, and significance to US exports. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, at the request of the Department of Defense (DoD), held a workshop in March 2015 to explore these changes and their implications for research and development (R&D) in the defense industry. Participants examined the shifting R&D landscape, including both DoD's mechanisms and alternative models, as well as collaboration issues and opportunities. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop, providing valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the defense industry today.
