Home > News > Compliance > New York City’s Earned Sick Time Act Takes Effect New York City’s Earned Sick Time Act Takes Effect Starting April 1, 2014, covered employers in New York City are required to provide employees with paid sick leave under the Earned Sick Time Act (“the Act”). The Act requires covered employers to provide up to 40 hours of paid sick leave per year to employees who work in New York City. Covered Employers: The Act applies to private sector employers with five or more employees who work in New York City. This includes: Employers with five or more employees; Employers who are subject to the New York State Labor Law; and Employers who are subject to the New York City Human Rights Law. Covered Employees: The Act covers all employees who work in New York City, regardless of where they live. Paid Sick Leave: Employers must provide up to 40 hours of paid sick leave per year to eligible employees. Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for paid sick leave, an employee must have worked for the employer for at least 90 days and have worked at least 80 hours in the past year.
