Femininity at Work: Gender, Labor, and Changing Relations of Power in a Swedish Hospital In "Femininity at Work: Gender, Labor, and Changing Relations of Power in a Swedish Hospital Rebecca Selberg presents an ethnographic study of nurses and their work in a Swedish hospital, offering fresh perspectives and insights into the field of paid care work. The book situates the new conditions for nurses' work firmly in the neoliberal transformation of the Swedish welfare state, where nursing has undergone dramatic changes in terms of work intensification and new forms of subordination and class boundaries. At the same time, the nursing profession has embraced new roles as adjunct managers in running clinics and taking on new responsibilities offered by New Public Management. The key contribution of Selberg's work is her use of the concept of "plurality of femininities" as a conceptual tool to grasp gendered subjectivities. Through empirically rich explorations of material and ideological conditions of care work, she shows that femininity can be understood as multiple and complex, rather than a single, homogeneous entity. This approach allows for a nuanced understanding of how gender shapes and is shaped by labor processes.
