The Image of Librarians in Cinema, 1917-1999: A Study of Stereotypes and Evolution Introduction The image of librarians in cinema has remained largely unchanged since its earliest days, portraying them as dowdy spinster women with glasses and buns, and overworked yet underpaid. This stereotype has been perpetuated in over 200 films during the sound era, exaggerating the characteristics and situations of librarians. In this chronologically arranged work, we will analyze the stereotypical image of male and female librarians in primarily American and British motion pictures from the silent era to the 21st century. We will examine each film, offering critical commentary and analyzing the librarian's socioeconomic conditions, motivations for leaving or not leaving the library, personal attributes such as clothing, hair, and age, entanglements with the opposite sex, and commonly used props, plot situations, and lines. We will also comment on whether librarians and library work are depicted accurately and analyze the development of the public's image of a librarian.
