African Town: A Story of Survival, Resilience, and Community In the year 1860, against all odds, a group of 110 men, women, and children from Benin and Nigeria were smuggled into the United States illegally, defying the ban on slave trade that had been in place for over two decades. This incredible feat was accomplished through the bravery and cunning of their captors, who risked everything to bring these individuals to America, hiding them in the swamplands of Alabama until the end of the Civil War. The journey of these last Africans brought to the US is chronicled in the powerful and stunning novel, "African Town which tells the story of their struggles, triumphs, and ultimate survival. The novel begins with the harrowing experience of the Middle Passage, where the enslaved individuals were subjected to unimaginable brutality and dehumanization at the hands of their captors. They were packed tightly onto the ship, Clotilda, with little food, water, or air, leading to the deaths of many during the grueling journey. Those who survived were brought to various plantations across the southern states, where they were forced to work long hours under the scorching sun, facing harsh punishments for even the slightest infraction. Despite these challenges, the group found ways to maintain their culture and traditions, passing down stories and songs from generation to generation.
African Town: A Story of Survival, Resilience, and Community
